[EVOKE] Are YOU a Refugee? A New Support Space

Good morning everyone, we have two meaningful events coming up this week: Unraveling Ethiopia and Are YOU a REFUGEE? These spaces are meant to uplift our stories, bring visibility to issues that matter, and create a sense of community. We have noticed that while there has been a lot of interest online, attendance at events has been low. This makes it difficult for us to maintain funding and continue hosting the kinds of programs that advocate for Africa and refugee communities. We want this organization to grow and thrive, but we truly need your support and presence to make that possible. If these issues resonate with you, we encourage you to attend, sign up on CampusGroups, and help us sustain this work. We will also begin sharing information about executive board positions for the next school year, so please stay tuned. Scroll to the bottom of this email to RSVP for the events. Unraveling Ethiopia

Join us for Unraveling Ethiopia, a necessary conversation on the ethnic divisions and ongoing tensions impacting communities across the country. This event will explore the political and historical roots of conflict in regions such as Tigray, Amhara, and Oromia, as well as how diaspora communities and allies can offer meaningful support. Come for the discussion, stay for community—delicious Ethiopian samosas will be provided as we share space, reflect, and raise awareness together. The event will take place on Thursday, March 27 from 8:30 to 11:00 PM in Bellflower Lounge.

Are YOU a REFUGEE

Join EVOKE and Students for Refugees for Are YOU a REFUGEE?, the official kickoff of our new Refugee Support Group. This event will center the voices and lived experiences of refugees, featuring powerful storytelling from CWRU faculty who have navigated displacement firsthand. Together, we will explore what it means to be a refugee across different identities, regions, and generations. Whether you are a refugee, child of refugees, or an ally looking to listen and support, this space is for you. Come enjoy African finger foods, connect with others, and help shape a space built for and by refugees. Friday, March 28 from 8:00 to 10:00 PM in Thwing 101.

Refugee Support Group Interest Form

If you have ever felt alone in your experience as a refugee—or know someone who has—you are not alone. We are building a space just for us. A space to breathe, to speak, and to be held (consensually) without having to explain who we are or where we come from. This group is for anyone who has been displaced due to war, conflict, persecution, or instability—whether across borders or within them. If you carry the weight of survival, migration, or being uprooted, this is your space too. If you are interested in joining the Refugee Support Group, please fill out the form below so we can find a time to meet. You are also welcome to share it with anyone who may need this space.
